If dining out were cheap, we wouldn’t have even included kitchens in our apartments in the Medical Center. Unfortunately, restaurants are expensive and eating out every night is a generally unsustainable habit. A lot of people spend more than they need to at restaurants, however, and we help our residents avoid unnecessarily hefty restaurant bills. That’s why we’ve put together a list of tips and tricks you can use to save money while dining out in Houston!
See, restaurants use a lot of different tricks to get people to spend more than they planned. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid overspending, and possibly even cut your average restaurant bill in half. If you make a habit out of following these tips, you can spend less and go out to eat more as a result!
Without further delay, let’s take a look at the list of tips below! When you’re done reading this week’s blog, please be sure to share the link to this post with your friends and neighbors at your community of apartments near Medical Center.
Check Your Inbox
While most of our inboxes are filled with annoying messages from retailers and useless coupons, there is gold to be found if you’re willing to look. We recommend subscribing to email lists from sites like OpenTable and Groupon. Next time you feel like going out to eat, be sure to check your inbox before you decide which restaurant to go to. You never know when you might find a BOGO deal, an extended happy hour, or another special waiting in your inbox.
The best way to save money at a restaurant is by saying, “no” when the waiter inevitably asks if you’d like to order drinks or appetizers. That’s hard to do, however, and it’s no fun. What’s the point of going out to eat if you can't enjoy your time by having drinks and apps before your entrees arrive?
If you want to enjoy drinks and apps but don’t want to spend a boatload of money on your meal, we recommend getting to the restaurant before 6. That way, you can order drinks and apps while taking advantage of happy hour prices. Sure, your entree will cost the normal amount, but you won’t care after securing discounted prices on apps and drinks.
Split Apps, Not Entrees
Next time you go out to eat, pretend there’s no difference between the appetizer menu and the entree menu. If all the options were available, which side of the menu would you actually order off of? Oftentimes, restaurants put their most outside-the-box dishes on the appetizer menu. Given that appetizers are almost always cheaper than entrees, why don’t more people order off the appetizer menu? If you’re just grabbing a quick bite with friends, you can save a lot of money by ordering off the appetizer menu. Just be sure not to let anyone shame you into only ordering off the entree menu!
